Have you ever used a plant-based remedy for a symptom, because it worked for someone else, or because the book said it would work, only to have it not work at all?
In the western mindset, we tend to see herbs, oils, and natural remedies through a lense of: “I have this symptom, what will take it away?” But matching essential oils to people isn’t about symptoms in the way we have been taught. It’s a simple and beautiful art.

“Peace I leave to you. I give my own peace to you. It is not as the world gives that I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not have fear.” John 14: 27 (from the Aramaic to English New Testament)
Jesus gave us His own peace. This is not a peace we conjure up, find through eastern meditation, or talk ourselves into possessing. It is a total gift, and will be completely different than what the world will offer us. That’s how you will know it–that it didn’t come from your natural, and it didn’t come from the world—but it came from God’s Presence.
There isn’t a pill, an essential oil, a psychic counselor, or medical treatment that can give you this peace.
Although loving friends, good doctors, and natural supplements are healthy for us, they do not replace what comes from Jesus alone.
Peace given from Heaven is received by our renewed spirits when we spend time in intimacy with God. Even as people who carry the Holy Spirit within us, we still have choices to make. That’s why it says “do not let your hearts be troubled and do not have fear.” We can choose to be intimate with the Lord, and cultivate friendship with Him—or we can choose our flesh and attempts to find peace within the realms of this world. If we choose the latter, we will be repeatedly taken down by trouble and fear.
God’s OWN peace is a gift to us. Choose to recieve this gift, bask in intimacy with God, and rest through every circumstance that you face.
It takes time to be close and intimate with anyone. The same goes for God! Spending time with Him is the best choice you will make for you spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness.
Should Christian use essential oils? What does the Bible really say about essential oils AS WE KNOW them today?
This certainly is a controversial subject. I’ve had people write me and say they can’t use essential oils because they are new age, tell me that only some companies are suitable for Christian folk, or just plain state that medicine is more “holy” than natural solutions. Today, I want to give you my perspective, as a Christian, and hopefully demystify some of the issues surrounding essential oils use.
The First mention of oils in the Bible is in Gen. 37:25. After that, there are many, many references to essential oils in the Bible. Now, keep in mind, the Bible implies a lot about essential oils and aromatic plants, more than it outright explains. It seems that most people were very familiar with them, such as we would be with a lot of over the counter tools that we use today. We might write a history of our family, but never include instructions for using first aid anointment, because we “know” how to use it—it’s a given in our culture.
Here are some terms used in the Bible:
Ointment (balm, gum, spices, anointing oil)
(An oily or unctuous substance, usually compounded of oil with various spices and resins and aromatics, and preserved in small alabaster boxes or cruses, in which the delicious aroma was best preserved. Some of the ointments have been known to retain their: fragrance for several hundred years. They were a much-coveted luxury, and often very expensive. –ED.)
Cosmetic . –The Greek and Roman practice of anointing the head and clothes on festive occasions prevailed also among the Egyptians, and appears to have had place among the Jews. (Ruth 3:2)
Funereal . –Ointments as well as oil were used to anoint dead bodies and the clothes in which they were wrapped. (Matthew 26:12)
Ritual.–Besides the oil used in many ceremonial observances, a special ointment was appointed to be used in consecration. (Exodus 30:23,33; 29:7; 37:29; 40:9,15) A person whose business it was to compound ointments in general was called an “apothecary.” (Nehemiah 3:8) The work was sometimes carried on by woman “confectionaries.” (1 Samuel 8:13)
We actually know more about how oils were used in the Biblical culture from reading other ancient texts. For example: the Egyptian embalming process included Cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, rosemary, juniper and cinnamon. In the New Testament, sandalwood (aloes) was also common for burial. The woman who anointed Jesus feet used “costly perfume” which in that day was essential oil before we had ways to produce chemicals in a lab.
But, let’s back up for a moment, and think foundation-ally. Essential oils were designed by God; they are the “lifeblood” of the plants that HE created. Furthermore, it indicates in Ez 47:12 and Revelation 22:2 that God intended or intends plants to be used for wellness. This includes dried herbs, tinctures, essential oils–and yes–when needed, medicine.
Since God created plants, and essential oils come from plants, essential oils are NOT new age, or satanic. They are CREATIONS OF GOD.
With the foundation in place, now we can examine where the New Age influence comes in, and if it impacts whether we should, or should not use essential oils in Christian homes.
Mis-Belief #1 Essential Oils Contain God.
False! Essential oils are not little molecules of God. Anyone who says this have a false belief. They are creations of God, but they do not contain God. All healing comes from God. This is where it gets tricky to understand… how does all healing come from God, yet certain substances seem to produce XYZ reliable results? The power is not in the essential oil, but in God. God created the earth and all that it contains. He set up laws, and workings within the earth, and gave each thing a purpose.
Mis-Belief #2 The Medical System is More Godly than Natural Solutions
The church in general has buried it’s head and refused to have anything to do with a lot of natural solutions. We rely on science and logic to treat things that plague us instead of seeking God. This is a very sad mis-belief.
The medical field has been a wonderful gift to mankind and if I was in a car accident, I wouldn’t want someone standing over me with essential oil…I want a paramedic!
The problem comes into effect when we place all our faith in a man made system. Our wellness should never be 100% in the hands of another human. We should take responsibility for our own health! WE should not be surrendered to a secular health care system that tells us what to do like robots, but should be seeking God’s healing through prayer and healthy lifestyles as He told us how to live.
Mis-Belief #3 Essential Oils Are New Age
Piffle farts! We already established that God created plants, and He owns all creation. There is no way that essential oils in and of themselves are New Age. Christians need to stop being so terrified of a BIG devil and acting like they have a small God. God is so much greater than anything counterfeit, He is REAL. He is TRUTH. You are not going to be accidentally drawn into the occult by using essential oils. As Christians, we should not be allowing the New Age movement to take and twist what God created to be good for people.
And as to what company you should buy your oils from? You can make a stink about that when you stop shopping at the local grocery store that sells pornographic magazines, and start shopping at only Christian owned stores who only buy from suppliers who are also Christian. Sorry, just not valid argument unless you’re willing to carry it all the way.
How SHOULD Christian be using essential oils?
The Bible clearly speaks of prayer AND anointing with oil. The fascinating thing about what we read in the Bible, and all the ways God told the Israelites to conduct themselves, is that today, Science and practice prove there was reason for everything God commanded. For example; the washing that God commanded kept His people from getting a lot of disease. We know that today, and practice it in all hospitals now. For that reason, I have to assume there is something important about the combination of praying and anointing with oil.
One of the ways I use essential oils is by waiting on the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to show you what to use, how to use it, etc.. Learn more about what is found in nature. Learn more about His foods that He created for us to sustain us. It’s all about God, not about becoming “pharmacists” of essential oils. The separation of God from medicine is a deadly mistake!
Anointing is mentioned 156 times in the Bible, (usually referring to oil, but occasionally to mud, or a spiritual anointing). Anointing oil always contained aromatics, if not 100% aromatic. The word “Anoint” actually means to “cover, rub, or smear the head or body with oil.”
And not just people were anointed with oil, but also things in the temple, food, shields (Is 21:5).
We can anoint each other and pray, anoint our doorposts and pray, anoint ourselves while praying… etc…
Am I against science? NO! Not at all! I think God hid things for us to discover! But we as Christians should not rely on science, or believe that science provides all the answers to life. Science should no become a false God. Christians should not DEMAND evidence from science. Science cannot explain God, but we believe in God…we cannot expect science to explain life. We are not above those in the Bible who worshipped idols…When we do not seek God first for healing, but look to someone on earth to fix our issues, are we not the same Essential oils and herbs also have the potential to become an idol.
There are so many benefits to drinking lemon water every morning—from cleansing your system to supporting a healthy liver—I would have to write an entire article to list them all. Squeeze half a lemon in warm/hot water, and drink it every morning as a simple way to support health in your body. Need to know more? Read this article.
#2 Converse with God
Relationships are about talking, listening, and just spending time together. We understand that when it comes to human relationships, but somehow tend to think that since God is God, He knows everything about us, so we don’t really need to take time to talk to Him. Wrong! He longs to hear from us, He desires to speak to us, and He wants to just spend time with us. Never neglect this time. It is the backbone of all life.
#3 Lay Hands on Your Children and Spouse and Pray/Prophesy Over Them
Laying on of hands and praying over your family is a very, VERY Biblical action which is missing from a lot of modern day evangelical homes. Speaking a blessing, calling for gifts, and praying scripture over your family is spiritual warfare of the highest degree. It will make your home a mighty fortress of God and cause your children to turn their hearts toward God and love Him.
#4 Learn Something New
Expand your mind, broaden your skills, have some fun! Try to learn something new every single day. Whether it’s reading a good Theological book (my favorite), learning to paint, reading about health, or trying a new recipe, do something that isn’t the “same ole, same ole” routine!
#5 Exercise for at Least 20 Minutes
I love exercise. I hate it too, but mostly I love it. My favorite workout right now is Revelation Wellness TV because I have access to MANY MANY different workouts, and I can do something different everyday. I really enjoy the admonishment in the Lord and Godly inspiration sprinkled throughout these workouts as well.
Other great workouts would be T-Tapp, a wonderful wellness workout that I taught for many years. Or getting a personal trainer online who can workout with you via Skype. I’ve worked with Jessica Vaughn and had FABULOUS results!
#6 Use High Quality Supplements
There is a lot of great supplements out there, and it’s a little overwhelming to decide which supplements would be most beneficial to you personally. The best I can do for you is to simply share what I use daily, and why I choose these from the millions.
Most importantly, I use essential oils daily. I feel this a big reason that my family enjoys very good health the last 4 years. We use oils for everything you can image! Our personal choice of essential oils is the Young Living brand.
Most days I make myself a protein drink. I like to mix my protein powders, and I like to use plant based proteins because I have an intolerance to cows milk. I mix Power Meal (rice based) and Hemp Protein. I also like to add a little Maca powder for adrenal support. I’ve recently started taking JuvaPower in Pineapple juice and JuvaTone tablets everyday as well to support my liver. I will probably do this for a month on, two months off, or some such schedule.
Other supplements I use off and on, listening to my Body’s needs include: Gaia herbs adrenal and thyroid supplements. I LOVE enzymes Essentialzyme and Detoxzyme. I also love Super B for energy. I give this to my teenage daughter when she needs it as well. Life 5 probiotics is something I try to take every evening before bed, on an empty stomach. And of course, I drink NingXia Red every single day for antioxidant support and energy! All Young Living Supplements can be purchased with a Wholesale account which you can get here! Open a Wholesale Account Young Living produces the highest quality supplements which are used overseas at health clinics for chronic diseases not mentioned here. 😉
#7 Connect with Friends
Relationship is very important. It’s easy to get wrapped up in your life, and in your world, and what your doing and not cultivate the relationships in front of you. This is especially dangerous for those of us in the online world. God placed you in your location for a reason. The people in your circle are there for YOU to connect with, and love on. Don’t miss out on them!
If you’re going to go to the trouble of hunting, cleaning, processing and storing wild game, then you’d better be prepared to keep it healthy and nourishing when you cook it for your family. I don’t get it when people are given the gift of pure, natural, meat at it’s finest, then they pump it full of horrible chemicals. Why? You can make sausages, jerky and dishes of all kinds without any chemicals.
We eat wild meat almost exclusively at our house, so we’re always creating new recipes for delicious suppers. This stew is no exception. My 13 year old daughter and I created it one night out of a chunk of venison tenderloin. With the addition of fresh turmeric and garlic, it’s a great supportive dish for inflammatory conditions!!!
Anti-Inflammatory Venison Stew
1 Pound Venison Stew Meat or Bite Size Steak
3/4 Cup Spelt Flour (or white flour of your choice)
Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Red Palm or preferred sauté oil
1 inch Fresh Organic Turmeric Root, grated (I was practically dancing in the store isle when I found they carried it!)
1 teaspoon Organic Dried or Fresh Basil
1 Teaspoon Organic Dried or Fresh Thyme
1 Bunch Green Onions
Sea Salt to taste
Chop your meat into bite sized chunks, then toss it in a plastic bag, add the flour and shake it! Meanwhile, heat your sauté oil in a deep stock pot. Add the meat/flour mixture to the pot and cook until the meat is brown, about 5 minutes. Add carrots, celery, garlic, and Turmeric and cook another 1-2 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients, EXCEPT the green onions. You’ll add the onions right before serving to maintain their fresh flavor.
Simmer over a low heat until veggies are soft. Depending on the cut of meat you used, you may pre-simmer just the meat for 30-60 minutes BEFORE adding the vegetables to tenderize the meat. Since we used tenderloin, it didn’t need more time then the carrots. =)
Add green onions and serve! We enjoyed ours with fresh hot spelt biscuits and used them like crackers to make a personal “pot pie.”
