Maybe you've experienced it to… Someone in your house wakes up sick with the stomach flu or you hear the person you work with is home today sicker than a dog and immediately you start to feel nauseous. I mean, you were with them just hours ago and you start wonder, "maybe I shouldn't eat this because it might just come back up". "Hey! I'm really feeling a little queasy". "I wonder when it's going to start"… Hours, a whole day then several days go by and nothing. You're not sick. Amazing isn't it? The things we believe and the feelings they produce. You could almost say that we make ourselves sick by thinking we are! I'm not suggesting that you could think that your red car is purple and wake up in the morning with it changed to purple. We can't change reality in that way but how we think effects what we do or not do. Did thinking that you were going to get sick actually make you sick? No it didn't, (but in the long term it can wreck havoc on your health). However, it did make you stuck. Stuck in a place of worry that you might get sick, stuck thinking you shouldn't eat this or maybe even stuck staying home waiting to get sick. Consequently we can get stuck by "sick thinking" when it comes to our fitness and health goals as well. Thoughts that get us stuck and prevent us from doing a workout could be:
- I'll probably fail at consistency.
- I need to workout 45+ minutes to get results but don't have that much time.
- I'll do it tomorrow.
- I don't have the money.
- I eat to much so it won't make a difference.
- I can't get to a gym.
- I have bad knees, shoulders, back etc…
All of those thoughts just serve to keep us stuck. Change your thinking–renew your mind moment by moment! Whenever you think you'll fail, rebuke that thought and replace it with one that says, "yes I can"! Some research suggests that shorter workouts are actually better for your health by keeping your cortisol levels lower. Ten or fifteen minutes per day can make BIG changes in YOU. Deny the thought that you'll do it tomorrow, put on your shoes and do it now–even if it's just 2 minutes of something. Money is truly not an issue for most people. Almost everyone affords something–soda pop, coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, you name it–something they can do without and use the $$ to invest in an exercise program that can be done AT HOME, without the expense of gym memberships or the worry of other people watching you. Any exercise you do burns calories that wouldn't get burned if you didn't and therefore will impact your weight loss positively no matter what your eating habits. Minor injuries are also no excuse. Some forms of exercise actually REHAB injuries!
An excuse is just the skin of a reason stretched over a LIE.
Stop lying to yourself and face the truth that only you can get you "un-stuck" by taking action. Take action by getting a mentor, an accountability partner, a schedule, rewarding yourself or whatever makes your feet move forward!
