That "Flawless" Person You Know
by Kayla Howard
You can always find someone who has more of what you wish you were, and make yourself dissatisfied with yourself by searching for them.
They are out there. Those people who’ve lost more weight than you, done it in less time, don’t fight thunder thighs, pudgy bellies or wrinkled skin. They don’t have acne, or spider veins or thinning hair. The can eat all they want and never gain or they actually have control over what they do eat with ease. You name it, the point is, you can always find someone supposedly “better” than you.
So what?
God created each of us with special gifts and talents. No two people throughout the entire scope of history have ever been exactly the same.   Diversity is a wonderful part of life. It would be boring if everyone looked or acted just the same.   We do not eat apples then compare them to oranges…“well, the orange is slightly better looking because orange is brighter than red so it’s better to be an orange”.   If you think about it, why is a size 6 better than a 10? If you’re fit, healthy, strong and grateful, it is not better!
As a fitness and nutrition coach, I often hear how disappointed people are with their body and results. Losing weight often seems mysterious. How does it happen? Why does it happen quick for some and slow for others?   Honestly, it truly is a mystery to me as well.
I do know that freedom from expectations is priceless.
We can “free” ourselves by doing something. When I began exercising regularly, I felt freedom. I knew that I was doing what is required to reach my goal. I find more freedom when I discipline myself to eat correctly because I actually feel better.   And finally I gained more freedom the day I fully understood just what it takes for a model to look the way she does in the magazine.
Even supposed “perfect” bodies must be position perfectly to look their best then airbrushed to improve them.   Just Google "airbrushing before and after" to get an idea!   Magazine covers advertise diets and workout routines, implying that we could look like the model.  The problem is, not even the model looks like herself!
One day I heard a radio program about how much a model is airbrushed and it was truly shocking. The list was extensive and specific.  It was amazing and freeing to finally understand how "fake" the photo's are.
It's time to start judging your success by what is real for your body.  Did you lose an inch?  Wonderful!  Is your skin smoothing out?  Great!  Can you stand taller and make it through the day with energy to spare? Fantastic!  Are you working to improve your character?  Beautiful character enhances outward beauty.  Nobody appreciates someone who is trying to be someone else.  The world will miss out if you don't give the gift of you.

  1. Oh Kayla,
Thank you! That is just what I needed to hear today! I’ve taken over a job from a very efficient, very correct, very “on-time” person and today I found myself saying “So-and-So would have done this so quickly, I just can’t do it like she does!!”
After reading your post I realised of course you’re right, we need not compare ourselves to others just like we would not compare apples and oranges. I have traits that my workmates probably find even more important than efficiency, which is probably why I got the job in the first place. I can definitely do the job, I just have to do it my way!! :))
    Thanks again!
