Important Answers about Essential Oils that You Need to Know
Since the brith of the internet, information explosion has overcome us. The fact that people can lie, tell the truth, and basically say ANYTHING they want about everything makes finding the truth really challenging. Today I want to address some basic questions people have about Young Living oils.
Does Young Living use pesticides?
We do not use pesticides at our Young Living farms or our partner farms. Both our farm practices and finished products are held to strict standards, and with the measures we have in place, we feel confident that we offer our members the best, purest products available.
Are Young Living products tested on animals?
Young Living has a policy against testing the efficacy or safety of its products on animals. Young Living’s products are formulated to be safe for nearly all users, and animal testing is neither required nor performed in our product development process.
Are Young Living essential oils certified organic?
Young Living prides itself on offering the purest and most effective essential oils possible, and we are often asked if our oils are certified organic. The organic certification, while important, is far from the only standard of quality by which to judge essential oils. Young Living practices a unique Seed to Seal® quality process that goes beyond the current organic standard in many ways. At Young Living, we don’t just rely on others to verify the purity of our oils. We work directly with our farms, growers, and distillers to ensure the quality, integrity, and authenticity of every product we produce. Our passion and commitment is to produce 100-percent pure, unadulterated essential oils that retain all of the natural constituents and therapeutic properties nature intended. Our Seed to Seal process ensures the purest therapeutic-grade essential oils through careful monitoring of every step of essential oil production—from the time a seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle. Every batch of our essential oils, whether cultivated on our own farms or by one of our carefully vetted partner growers, is rigorously tested and subjected to careful review through every step of production and meets or exceeds industry safety and purity standards. Young Living’s dedication to quality ensures that we provide pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils with the complete, optimal blend of plant constituents to provide maximum potency and results. As millions of satisfied members and customers across the globe can testify, Young Living sets the standard for purity and quality in the essential oil industry. While standards and guidelines can vary and be modified, our dedication to providing the safest, most beneficial essential oils in the world will never change.
What tests does Young Living conduct on their essential oils?
Young Living uses its own internal labs and third-party facilities to verify that Young Living purity and potency standards are met. Each batch of essential oil is sent through six rigorous tests and must meet established quality benchmarks to pass through successfully.* Mass Spectrometer—Identifies the names of each constituent (plant chemicals) in the oil.*Gas Chromatograph—Measures the percentage of constituents in the oil.*Refractive Index—Measures the density of the oil using a concentrated beam of light. *Specific Gravity—Measures how heavy the oil is as compared to water.*Flash Point—Ignites the oil and tests it against standard flash temperatures.*Optical Rotation—Measures the molecular structure of the oil.Once the tests are complete, the results are compared to the vast library of information Young Living has amassed over 20 years. This library of oil data is unmatched in the industry. If the incoming oils do not meet the established profile, they are rejected and not allowed to be bottled as a Young Living product. (At a trip to the farm, Gary told us they will actually dispose of oils that do not meet standards because they should NEVER be on the market. Most companies will sell them to someone else.)
What is the shelf life of Young Living oils?
Young Living’s essential oils do not expire and will maintain their integrity, efficacy, and beneficial properties virtually indefinitely, provided they are stored properly in a dark-glass bottle, upright and tightly sealed, out of sunlight, and in cool temperatures.
Are Young Living essential oils distilled multiple times?
Each batch of Young Living essential oil is only processed/distilled from plants once before bottling.
How are Young Living essential oils created?
Essential oils are aromatic liquids distilled or extracted from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, and seeds. Most Young Living essential oils are extracted using steam distillation. Our food-grade stainless steel distillers are based on a state-of-the-art design that uses very low pressure and low temperature, which is critical for preserving all of the fragile therapeutic constituents of essential oils. Plants are steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using a special low-pressure, low-heat vertical steam technology. Our citrus oils are cold pressed from the rinds of their designated fruit, such as bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. No solvents or synthetic chemicals of any kind are used or added in either method.
Is it possible to be allergic to essential oils?
Essential oils do not generally contain the proteins responsible for allergic reactions, which minimizes the likelihood of an allergic reaction. However, individual sensitivities do vary, and people can still experience sensitivities to essential oils. When using a new essential oil, dilution and a skin spot test is a good idea to ensure that you do not experience any sensitivity to that particular oil.
Can essential oils be ingested?
Many essential oils can be ingested. All of our oils that can be ingested feature a white Supplement Facts box on the product label and dietary usage instructions online. Research indicates that some oils are more effective when taken orally. Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Dilution and dosage is dependent on the age, size, and the health constitution of the individual. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally.
What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition?
Can essential oils interact with prescription medications? – If you have a disease or medical condition, or if you are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that you consult with a health advisor who has experience with EOs prior to using an EO. Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between the medication(s) and the essential oil(s).
Can essential oils be used on children?
Many EOs are appropriate for use with children, and they should be diluted prior to use. Some YL products are pre-diluted with carrier oil as indicated on product label and are intended for direct application on children. Children generally respond well to EO, and use of a carrier oil is recommended. One – 2 drops of EO such as SleepyIze, RutaVala, Gentle Baby and Peace & Calming may be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the bottom of the feet.
Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing?
As with any medical condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in EO usage. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia&sclarea), Sage (Salvia&officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum&vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus&officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum&vulgare), and Wintergreen (Gaultheria&procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils.

Personally, I believe one of the best ways to learn something is to passionately pursue teaching it to yourself. Obviously to do that, you need to find experts to learn from, and places with great information.
Although teaching about essential oils is something I’m passionate about doing, I am restricted in what I can say here on my website in order to protect you from misinformation…basically… the government wants to protect you from people who would dupe you into buying something that didn’t work. And that is not a bad thing!
In light of that, I wanted to provide you with some links and learning tools so that you can do some exploring on your own! Here are my top favorite places to learn about essential oils…
Every woman has some encounter with hormones in her life. It’s just a natural, normal part of life! Every woman may also need some extra support in this area from time to time. Essential oils are the perfect wellness supporter!

So, let’s rediscover natural harmony with unique plant extract formulations and essential oils. This is a short list of my favorites to get you started.

Normally I will only use Young Living oils on my family, but in a pinch, when Young Living doesn’t have something I need, I will also use one other brand of essential oils –Original Swiss Aromatics. Young Living does not carry Vitex oil, so I use OSA Vitex Oil. Vitex oil balances estrogen and progesterone. Just one to two drops per day may support hormonal balance in healthy women. These two brands of oils are the ONLY brands I use, or recommend.
Supplementation is also critical for totally hormonal wellness. With out busy lifestyles and lack of nutrient rich food, supplementation is very supportive to health!

This is it. My true confessions about Young Living, their oils, their company, and the whole idea of Network Marketing.
Confession #1 -I Have Wondered if Essential Oils are Legitimate
For real? Sniffing something makes my body more healthy? (Arches eyebrow) For real?
Even after I started using Young Living essential oils, I wondered if they REALLY were the best, or if they really were just hype. I got results…but…I needed to know. Do we really make great oils? Do we really make a pure product? Is there something better than what we offer out there?
I don’t want to waste my time or my money, and I especially do not want to waste my integrity selling something that isn’t the best.
After spending time at our farms, seeing the plants, seeing the distillation process, and hearing Gary Young’s heart, I was MORE THAN FULLY convinced that this is a honorable company selling a superior essential oil.
And no, he didn’t put a spell on me. 😉
Confession #2 -I Have Thought that Network Marketing Was “Criminal”
At least, that’s the best word I can think of to describe what I thought about network marketing for most of my life. Where do we get that idea anyway? If you think about it for 30 seconds, all marketing is networking. All products, every single thing you buy, is marketed and sold by someone, somehow, somewhere. Furthermore, marketing is a Biblical concept….I mean….what’s the other option? Stealing? Communism?
I think people should be able to create GREAT products with ideas that God gave them. And I think other people should help them sell these great products. That’s all Network Marketing is…selling great products.
Confession #3 -I Have Worried About Whether Or Not I Can Help You
Will my essential oils make a difference for you like they have for me? Can I teach you how to build the business you want? A successful business like mine?
I worry about these things.
Recently God has been convicting me about my worry in this area. He’s saying, “as long as you’re doubled minded about this, you’re not gonna help anyone with your oils, or help anyone really build a great business.”
How true! So with single minded focus, I want to confess; ESSENTIAL OILS WORK! They are awesome!!!!!!! I also confess that I have the skills and the desire to help others build a great business with this wonderful product! In fact, I hope that you will get to come visit the farms in in Idaho, and if you do, we can hang out there together in person. But for now, I would be honored to help you get started with your first step. Whether you want to try using essential oils simply for the the health benefits with a wholesale account, or if you want to step out and create a whole entire culture of vibrant life in a website, I would love to be part of it!

3 Ways Essential Oils Are Adulterated and How You Can Tell
by Kayla Howard
Essential oils are not cheap to make. In fact, pure essential oils are expensive, labor intensive, and subject to all kinds of hard work. They are pricey, as any pure product, carefully grown and extracted should be. In order to make essential oils less costly, some companies will “extend” essential oils. That means, they will stretch them by diluting them in some way.
Essential oils blends are often blended with a fatty oil base, and if it is sold as such, that is NOT adulteration. Some oils however are sold a “pure” essential oil, when they actually have been extended in some way, and then sold cheaper. Here are some basic ways that essential oils may be “extended” and how you can identify if it is pure, if it is what the label says it is, or if it is contaminated.
Extended with Fatty Oil
As stated before, essential oil blends are often blended with fatty oils such as almond oil, coconut oil or jojoba oil. In the case of a essential oils being clearly marked as a blend, and the fatty oil being listed in the ingredients, this is NOT an adulteration! This is a great way to use essential oils.
If however, your oil is labeled and sold as 100% pure essential oil, and DOES NOT include the fatty oil in the ingredients, you have an impostor! You can tell if an oil has been extended with fatty oil by the greasy feel on your skin. A pure essential oil will not leave a greasy feel on your skin after a few moments. You may also tell if an EO has been extended with a rancid fatty oil simply by the smell. Most of us are familiar with the smell of rancid fatty oils. YUCK!
Another test is to place your essential oils on paper. Most pure EO will not leave an oily mark when dried, however, some pure essential oils will leave a mark, especially expressed oils (citrus) or absolutes.
Extended with Alcohol
Another common way to extend an essential oil, and therein making it cheaper, is by adding alcohol to the EO. Ethyl Alcohol is a common substance added to EO to extend them. It’s very hard to detect this by smell, but it is possible. You’ll need to become familiar with the scent of ethyl alcohol in order to identify this adulteration, (which is in my opinion, a true adulteration).
Extended with Another Similar Oil or Surfactants & Emulsifiers
Finally, EO may be extended by adding a similar smelling EO which is cheaper to produce to a more expensive oil. For example, true lavender may be extended with lavandin, or Rose EO could be extended with geranium, (although most often, Rose oil is simply purely synthetic). This is the hardest form of adulteration to detect, and can only be really guarded against by knowing your supplier.
Surfactants & Emulsifiers may be added to EO to extend them as well. A simple way to test your essential oil for this adulteration is by placing a drop in water. Pure essential oils will float on the top. Emulsified mixtures will dissolve in water and produce milk or opaque solutions.
There you have it–lots of tools to test you essential oils! Obviously, essential oils can be contaminated or adulterated in other ways, these are simply the most common and easy to identify!
