Eating to Burn the Fat
by Kayla Howard

Most of us, no matter at what point our fitness journey may be, would like to lose a little more fat. For myself, I have put on 10-15 pounds over the last 3 years that I am okay with, but started wondering if I could get rid of.  It would be fun to actually see more of the muscle I know that I’m building underneath the soft cushion.
Most of the time, losing the last few pounds does come down to eating better.  Although I eat real food almost all the time, I don’t always do it in a balanced way.
I’m notorious for grabbing whatever is easy to eat during the day, and not eating enough protein.  However, when you are building muscle and reducing fat, it’s essential that you do feed your body high quality protein.
Eating to lose isn’t really rocket science. I learned about it when I got my personal trainer certificate. You can read about it literally all over the web. After doing some research this week, I came up with a few simple guidelines to follow.   Doing this should kick up the fat loss pretty quick without making you go nuts with cravings in the process!
The Guidelines:
#1 Eat lean protein at each meal.  (Although, I simply refuse to not eat the yolk with the egg.)
#2 Eat plenty of vegetables, preferably not high starch with each meal.  The best fruits to eat are berries as they are low in sugar.
#3 Eat plenty of well cooked beans.
#4 Only eat bread and flour products (whole grains) within 1.5 hours of doing a workout.
#5 Take one whole day off per week and eat however you like!
The question becomes–what does this look like?  Here is a sample of a real day in my life and how I incorporated these guidelines into my eating.  It wasn’t hard, it just took a little cooking time instead of grabbing time.
1 Day Sample Menu
Breakfast: Ham & Cheese Omelet with Sautéed Zucchini
Lunch: 3 oz lean deer burger patty, LOTS of raspberries
After Workout Snack: Whole wheat bread with Almond Butter
Dinner: Grilled Salmon with Green Salad
Yes, you CAN do this!!

Thanks Kayla for this post. This is the plan that I follow and it offers great success. I use the 90/10 plan :-) 90% healthy and 10% I allow for cheat days that are within reason….
