Your Essential First Aid Kit
Essential oils can help you create a practical, natural first aid kit.
Certain plants like lavender contain powerful constituents that may help relieve mild burns or cleanse small cuts. Other essential oils that can be added to a first aid kit include peppermint essential oil (stomach discomfort), lemon essential oil (cleansing), and Thieves® essential oil blend (may be effective against airborne bacteria).
Every home should have several well stocked first aid kits. When an emergency strikes, having all the items you need preassembled is important to quick treatment.
As you gather things for your first aid kit, be sure to include items such as burn ointment and pain reliever. Here are some other items you may want to have in addition to essential oils:
- Two pairs of latex gloves (or other sterile gloves if allergic to latex)
- Sterile dressings to stop bleeding
- Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes
- Eye wash solution
- Thermometer
- Prescription medication (insulin, asthma inhalers)
- Prescribed medical supplies (glucose meter, etc.)
- Cell phone
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Tube of petroleum jelly or other lubricant
- Laxitive
Essential Oils You Should Include & Why
- Lavender -For many, many things! (see Sleep Better for more about lavender)
- Lemon -For sore throats and viruses.
- Peppermint -Soothes the digestive track. Helps reduce fevers.
- Thieves Blend or Lemongrass -Kill bacteria and have even been shown to be effective against MRSA.
- Helichrysum -Stops bleeding (apply topically)
- Valor -Emotionally balancing, to help with trauma.
- Eucalyptus -For cols, sinus infections and congestion. Place a few drops in your hand and inhale to open up the sinuses.
