3 Surprising Ways “Franken-Foods” are Impacting Your Life
by Kayla Howard
Franken-foods, otherwise known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), are becoming increasingly more central to healthy food discussions. Not because they are good for you, no, the complete opposite.
I think I know you well enough to know that you don’t need a sermon from me on the evils of GMO foods. However, I’ll give you just a quick recap…
3 ways that genetically modified foods mess with your health:
#1 Befuddling Your Body Chemistry
First I have to admit, I’m respectful of scientists, and the amazing things they understand. What these brilliant people have learned about creation is mind boggling. The fact that they can create these “franken-foods” is something wild and I concede, pretty cool. However, it’s not cool what effects we are starting to see in the human body as it responds to them.
#2 Chaos in Your Garden
Not only can these foods potentially create havoc in your body, they make growing foods more complicated. Have you ever tried to grow a garden from seeds? Seeds that have been hybrid or otherwise altered usually don’t reproduce. Meaning, you can get a crop the first year, but you can’t save the seeds from some of your produce to use next year. That’s not the way God made the cycle to work.
#3 Muddling Your Friendships
Already I have agreed that GMO foods are health hazards in many ways. It’s not hard to find compelling and well written information on why GM foods should not be consumed.
In fact, it’s likely you are even more convinced and passionate than I am about eating real food.
However, be careful running around telling all your friends they shouldn’t feed their kids Cheetos because you might find that, well…that you no longer have any friends.
When we start spouting off all the information we know, “oh! You really shouldn’t give those Cheerios to your baby—have you read the ingredients on those things?” What our friends hear is, “you are a bad mother.”
Nobody listens to people that speak insulting and condemning information directly into their face.
A passion for healthy eating—or healthy anything can turn you into a Frankenstein yourself if you alienate people by constantly talking about your ideas and what you “know.”
Be wise with opportunities to share your successes. Wait until someone asks why your kids are rarely sick. Or why you don’t vaccinate. Or how you have so much energy. Or, start a blog where you can write freely!
If eating real food and doing regular exercise works as good as we say it does, it will be evident in our lives.
That's just the way I see it!

Excellent post! I agree wholeheartedly!
My question is what can we do about these GMO products? Even big names in organic foods have given in to pressure from Monsanto. So what can we do to make a difference?
My pastor shared with us this week why he's always hated pep rallies — mainly because they don't win games! It's the guys out on the court (or field) who win games! He says when we gather with like-minded people and cheer wildly for what we support and boo the opposing side and then just walk out the door feeling satisfied, we have done nothing. We have to get out on the court/field and make a difference! How can we play this game against Monsanto and win?? any thoughts?
I would LOVE to say I have ideas, but so far, I don’t. I’m just pondering this myself and welcome discussion!!!
I agree with what you said. Dr Mercola's web site has talked about GNO's and what percentage of different foods are made with them. Occasionally he lets people know what legislation is coming up so we can let our legislators know how we feel.
Great post Kayla!! I love these posts where God wants you to write and you don't really want to! It is so encouraging that more and more people are talking about these very important issues. We recently had a bill come up for GMO labeling. I was so excited and went down to our state capitol to testify. The turn out was huge…11 pages of testimony in favor of labeling! Unfortunately the bill did not make it past committee so never came up for vote. I could not believe it BUT non the less it was encouraging it came up and I have no doubt it will be again soon. When it does I will go down and testify again. We have to keep on keeping on speaking truth in love!
Well said, Kayla. You feel sorry for the person who won't listen to your warnings, but the point is, they won't listen. They turn a deaf ear, so the only solution is to peak their interest by proving you are on the right track. Be a living example. Hopefully they will catch on before it is too late.
just a little quibble with one of the comments – I'm assuming you're referring to Whole Foods etc bowing to Monsanto – so my quibble is that Whole Foods is not itself organic, but carries some organic foods… Doesn't justify their actions AT ALL of course. But my point is that if you look for a "certified organic" label or logo on your food, it will not be GM – the organic regulations do not allow it, no-way, no-how.
Frances Moore Lappe's new book EcoMind is a great read – she suggests regarding the higher cost of organic food as health insurance! And a study a couple of year's ago took the standard "food basket" that the annual cost of food is compared against, took out the junky stuff, made the rest organic, and the cost was no different…
